The Rofla Gorge, which lies south of Andeer (see separate entry) on the old road to Avers, is well worth a detour from the motorway. The Roflaschlucht Inn, at an altitude of 1,097 metres, is situated at the entrance to the gorge and gives visitors access to the rock hewn gallery on payment of a fee. Rofflaschlucht is said to be the only place where you can cross the Rhine underground. The Melchior family bought the inn in 1833 and Christian Pitschen-Melchior built a path to the waterfall by hand; a task which took seven winters and involved 8000 explosive charges.
