Rodels, another attractive small village in the Hinterrhein region, is located approximately 22 km south west of Chur at an altitude of 684 metres. First documented in the mid-12th century as Routine, it is just south of Paspels (see separate entry), with the villages of Pratval and Almens nearby. Rodels has charming 17th and 18th century houses and, above the village to the east, the 12th century castle of Rietberg or Rätusberg. This features in the novel ‘Jurg Jenatsch’ (set in the 30 years Grisons war) by the writer/poet Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825-1898). Pratval has the ruins of Hasensprung castle.
