Located in Monte Carasso, some 2 km west of Bellinzona, is the restored ancient Agostinian Convent and adjoining church of St Bernardino and St Girolamo. The convent dates back to the 15th century and was closed in 1859. It lay neglected until 1977 when the Swiss architect Luigi Snozzi (b 1932), a protagonist of contemporary architecture, was commissioned to restore and refurbish the whole complex. Combining old with new, the area has been restored to its original function. While in the area, visit the church of San Bernardo on the mountainside; it has some fine 15th-17th century frescos.
