The delightful village of Reichenau, at an altitude of 603 metres, is located approximately 10 km southwest of Chur, at the confluence of two Rhine tributaries, the Vorderrhein and the Hinterrhein. The village dates back to 500 AD and the name originates from the Benedictine Abbey of Reichenau on Reichenau Island in Lake Constance, which owned property in the area. Reichenau has a number of bridges and is an important road junction. The old castle Schloss Reichenau, which was altered in 1775 and 1820, is the home of the von Planta family. There are rafting trips from Ilanz to Reichenau.
