On the right bank of the Sarine (Saane River), to the north of the attractive Place des Forgerons, is the 13th century Red Tower (Tour Rouge). Having been built in 1250, it is the oldest and, arguably the most impressive, of Fribourg’s many former fortifications and a fine example of castle architecture of the times. The tower was used as a prison and a site for execution by beheading up to 1840. It is 15 metres square on plan, 38 metres high and has 3-metre thick walls at the base.
