The village of Realp in the Uri canton is located at an altitude of 1,538 metres, in beautiful surroundings on the road to the Furka pass, some 8 km southwest of Andermatt. First documented in 1363 as Riealb, the name is derived from ‘riva alpa’ (meaning mountain pasture stream); it is a great place for both summer and winter walks. The Furka Steam Train (see separate entry) departs from Realp station. The lovely village square (Dorfplatz) has two attractive buildings, the parish church and adjacent Hotel Post. Nearby is the village of Tiefenbach, which also has an interesting church and inn.
