The Rath Museum was the first Swiss museum to be devoted to the fine arts. It was built as a gift to the people of Geneva by two sisters, Jeanne-Françoise and Henriette Rath. Inaugurated in 1826, the museum was conceived as a "Temple of the Muses" embodying both French taste and the Italian style. The Rath is an affiliate of the colossal Art and History Museum and contains classic examples of Swiss art, as well as an ongoing rotation of exhibits from all over Europe. Special emphasis has been placed on archaeology and ancient art to balance the accent on modern and contemporary art.
