The Protestant Church, located on a hilltop at the western end of Brienz, at one stage shared its site with the castle of Brienz’s ruling barons. It is believed that they had the church built around 1140, to replace an existing timber church. The outstanding feature of the church, which was badly damaged by lightning in 1883, is its 12th century late Romanesque tower and spire. During façade renovations in 1976, a sundial was discovered, which is now on the south wall; it shows Central European Time in Arabic numerals and local time in Roman numerals.
