The Prison Tower (Käfigturm), which is Berne’s second tower and was its second gate, was built in 1255/56. Rebuilt in red sandstone between 1641 and 1643 by Joseph Plepp and Anthoni Graber, a prison was added, which continued to serve until 1897; it is a splendid Late Renaissance period monument. The tower’s roof has four lookout oriels and is topped by a belfry and a spire; the clocks were added in 1691. Between 1977 and 1979, the Käfigturm was completely renovated internally and externally; it is now the seat of Confederation’s Political Forum and hosts exhibitions and events relating to political issues.
