The Place Neuve, built outside the former defensive ramparts of the city, has become the focal point of Genevan culture. One side is taken up with the Grand-Théâtre (opera), which is flanked by the much-vaunted Conservatory of Music and the Rath Museum, internationally renowned for its temporary exhibitions. In the centre of the square, a statue depicts the Genevan general Henri Dufour. Monsieur Dufour is regarded as a national hero. A great lover of his country, he was the first to establish a map of Switzerland.
