The Place Georges Python, at 610 metres (2001 feet) above sea level and named after a former prominent political figure, is reached by both the Rue de Lausanne and the Route des Alpes. The Ursuline Convent is on the east side of the square with the former main Post Office to the west. Also nearby are the Albertinium Seminary, the St Michel Jesuit church with the tomb of St Peter Carnisius (1521-1597), the first German Jesuit and the Cantonal and University Library (see separate entry). The former Civic Hospital and the famous funicular are also in close proximity.
