The Place du Bourg-de-Four, in the heart of the Old Town, has always been a meeting place for the people of Geneva. Many of the houses were built the middle of the 16th century to accommodate exiled Protestants. Today, there are 16th, 17th and 18th century buildings facing on the square. Also of note is the 18th century facade of the Palais de Justice (courthouse) inside which are yet older buildings, such as the convent of the Order of St. Clare and, until 1857, a hospital. Still today, Genevans gather around the lovely 18th century flowered fountain or on the terrace of picturesque bistros.
