The Pisoni Fountain is regarded as an outstanding example of the Zopfbrunnen (braid fountain), using a decorative architectural style, popular in Switzerland and southern Germany during the transition from Rococo to Classicism. Located under the chestnut trees on Munsterplatz, and capped with an urn, it dates from 1784 and was designed by Paolo Antonio Pisoni (1738-1824), a Swiss neo-classicist architect. Pisoni is well known for completing the St Ursus Cathedral in Solothurn, following the death of his uncle. Note the horned satyr mythical creatures on the base which act as waterspouts.
