The Pharmaceutical History Museum of the University of Basel has one of the world’s largest collections related to the subject. The museum was founded in 1925 by pharmacist Josef Anton Häfliger, when he donated his collection to the University. It is housed in the 13th century ‘Haus zum vorderen Sessel’, where the humanist Erasmus (1466-1536) once lived from 1514 to 1516 and where the renowned ‘doctor’ Paracelsus (1493-1541) also visited. Highlights of the museum are complete pharmacy interiors, an alchemist’s laboratory, instruments, ceramic pharmaceutical vessels and an extensive collection of obsolete remedies that were commonly used before the 19th century.
