The Paul Klee Centre opened in June 2005, in the building designed by the renowned Italian architect, Renzo Piano (b.1937). Paul Klee (1879-1940) was Swiss born, but of German nationality, and was influenced by many different styles, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism and he worked in many different media. The centre houses the world’s most important collection of his works, some 4,000 out of a total oeuvre of 10,000. In addition, there is a great deal of biographical material, in text and picture form, and Klee’s collection of natural history objects. An important feature of the centre is the children’s museum (Kindermuseum Creaviva).
