Historically, the Bundeplatz in front of the Houses of Parliament was a parking space, but it has been completely redeveloped and was inaugurated in 2004. The Swiss-US architect Stephan Mundwiler and designers Ruedi Stutz and Christian Stauffenegger remodelled the square with 3,600 granite slabs from the Alps and there is now a water display, with 26 fountains representing the cantons. The display takes place in season every half hour. The square hosts traditional markets and is intended to become the focal point of the city; it has already won prestigious awards from the American Institute of Architects and the California state.
