The present complex designed by the architect Hans Wilhelm Auer (1847-1906) was completed in 1902, but building on the complex started as early as 1852. Pride is taken that materials from Switzerland, and nowhere else, were utilised; in all, 38 artists were employed on the decoration of the buildings. Both chambers and the domed central hall feature many scenes from Switzerland’s history and the central glass dome shows the coats of arms all the cantons, including the latest, Jura (1978). The central mosaic is the federal coat of arms. There is much to see and well worth a visit.
