Gustin of Champéry was born in about 1780 in Champéry. He joined Napoleon’s army as a mercenary and lived through the battle of Berezina in 1812. He was later in exile in Russia. The yearning to see his family again, in the summer of 1863, took him back to Champéry. Fifty years has passed since he last saw his village and he painted a series of boards in the form of a comic strip, showing his discoveries. These original boards are displayed in the village streets. The paintings of Gustin depict life in a hard-working 19th Century village.
