The western end of Brienz, near the lakeside road leading to Interlaken, is the oldest and most romantic part of the village. The Brunngasse, where most of the wooden chalets in the cobbled street date back to the 18th/19th centuries, was once awarded the title of ‘the most beautiful street in Europe’. Cascading flowers from the balconies enhance and decorate the carved facades. There is still evidence in Oberdorfstrasse that it used to be the main street of Brienz with many shops. Some of the lovely chalets in ‘Am Dorf’, the area around the Protestant church, still have woodcarving workshops.
