Discovered around 1240, the first bath-house at the Tamina gorge was erected by monks in 1350 and early patients were let down by rope in baskets. In 1535 the famous Theophrastus Paracelcus (1493-1541) became the first medical doctor at the spa. Closed in 1969 and in danger of demolition, it has been fully restored, including the neo gothic bath chapel and is now the oldest baroque bath-house in Switzerland. Located 5.5 km south of Bad Ragaz, it is a pleasant 1.25 hour walk, but there is also a bus service. As well as the bath facilities, it has a fine restaurant.
