The Ogre Fountain (also known as the Child Eater fountain) is located in Kornhausplatz and is another creation of Swiss sculptor Hans Gieng. Originally known as Platzbrunnen, it was erected in 1545/56 and replaced an earlier 15th century wooden fountain. One of the strangest decorative fountains, it depicts an ogre devouring a naked child with a sack containing more children. There is a frieze around the base by Hans Rudolf Manuel (1525-1571) portraying armed bears going to war. There is a legend that the statue was anti-Semitic, but it seems more likely to be a carnival character warning to disobedient children.
