Old town Obergasse has much to fascinate the visitor and the divided German and French character of Biel is illustrated by the French style houses on one side of the street and the German style on the other. A feature of Obergasse is the 16th century Angel Fountain with its sculpture of an angel and a female devil. The former Inn Zur Krone, which dates from 1578-1582, has an inscribed tablet commemorating the fact that writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) stayed there in 1779. There are wall murals and attractive wrought iron signs throughout this area, which is a delight.
