The majestic Nydegg Bridge across the River Aare offers beautiful views along the river and forested areas that tower above it. It was built in 1840, close to the Untertorbrücke (see separate entry) which until then had been the only bridge across the Aare. It was the first high level bridge and connects the old city to the new eastern part, the centre arch has the biggest stone arch span in continental Europe at 55 metres (180 feet). Just before the bridge is the little Nydegg church, built in 1494 on the site of an Imperial stronghold and restored in 1956
