The Notre Dame Church is located about 50 metres north of the St Nicholas Cathedral and next to the Espace Jean Tinguely (see separate entries). Built at the end of the 12th century, the church is the oldest in Fribourg, but received its Baroque-Classical façade in 1787 and was again altered in 1853. The spacious interior has white and gold stucco work and a charming 18th century Neapolitan nativity scene. Outside is the 1547 Samson fountain by Hans Gieng which was copied from a design by Dürer; it depicts Samson prising open the lion’s jaws.
