On the Quai du Général-Guisan, near the Jardin Anglais, is a splendid monument showing two young ladies with their arms encircling each other’s waist and draped in bronze attire. This statue on the esplanade of the Mont-Blanc Bridge symbolizes the attachment of Geneva to the Confederation on September 12, 1814. The damsels carry a double-edged sword and shield and stare fixedly at the lake and distant horizons. One represents the Republic of Geneva and the other Helvetia, which is today Switzerland. The monument was inaugurated in 1869.
