The town of Näfels, with a population of some 4,000, is located at an altitude of 437 metres, about 7 km north of Glarus. First documented in 1240 as Nevels, it has the splendid Freuler Palace which houses the Glarus Cantonal Museum (see separate entry). Näfels has a striking church and was the scene of the famous 1388 battle, where the Swiss Confederates beat the Hapsburgs, in spite of being heavily outnumbered; the battle is commemorated by a monument. The charming Obersee lake lies about 6 km to the west and there is a scenic route to Walensee over the Kerenzerberg.
