St Arbogast Church is centrally located in Muttenz, approximately 7 km southeast of Basel and is named after its patron saint, who was the Bishop of Strasbourg c.600 AD. Built in the 12th century, it is a splendid example of a medieval fortified church, with the seven metre surrounding walls constructed in 1380 still intact. The tower was built in 1430 by a member of the Münch family, whose coat of arms can be seen on the west side; the bell, donated in 1435, can still be heard daily. Wall paintings from 1513, plastered over during the Reformation, were restored in the 1970s.
