The historic town of Muttenz, with a population of some 17,000, is located 7 km southeast of Basel and was known in Roman times as Montetum (the present name dates from the 13th century). Owned by the Münch family of Münchenstein from 1306 to 1517, the village suffered from the Basel earthquake of 1356 and the 1628 plague when 15% of the population died. The old medieval village core is a heritage site and additional attractions include the local museum, which highlights the town’s history and development and the 1920 Freidorf communal housing estate of 150 buildings by Hannes Meyer (1889-1954).
