The Musical Instrument Museum is one of the four which constitute the Basel History Museum. Opened in 2000 to replace an earlier museum, it houses Switzerland’s largest collection of musical instruments. The exhibits are displayed according to particular themes; the ground floor to five centuries of Basel music, the second floor to Concerts, Choral Music and Dance and the third floor to Parades, Festivals and Signals. There is a multimedia information system which provides additional information and enables visitors to hear how the instruments sound. The building was a prison from 1835 to 1995 and is an historic monument.
