The town of Munchenstein has the River Birs running through it and is home to some 12,000 inhabitants; it is located about 6.5 km southeast of Basel and is divided into three sub-districts, Münchenstein Dorf, Neumünchenstein and Neue Welt/Brüglingen. The first mention of the town’s present name was in 1295, but written records date back to 1196. Other attractions include the remains of Munchenstein Castle completed in 1334 and the 1832 Villa Ehinger in Neue Welt which was designed by the architect Melchior Berri (1801-1854) and is now a music school. The well known 1920/21 Wasserhaus residential estate was developed by the architect Wilhelm Eduard Brodtbeck (1873-1957).
