Morbio Inferiore, located only two kilometres from Chiasso, lies 364 metres above sea level. Evidence, such as the sarcophagi found on San Giorgio and the foundations of a patrician Roman villa found together with various artefacts dating from the 3rd century, proves Roman occupation. There was once a castle, mentioned in 1198, where the Sanctuary of St. Mary of the Miracles now stands (1595-1613). Other places to visit include the ancient Ghitello mill and various caves and mills around the Mulini area.
