The Morat Gate (Porte de Morat) on Murtengasse is another of Fribourg’s 14 historic fortified towers. It was built around 1410 at the edge of the gorge, which had been spanned by the 13th century fortified Donnamary Bridge. The 34-metre-high tower was a square shell structure until 1888, when part of it was demolished for road widening; a further opening was formed in the wall in 1950. Nearby, in the Derrière les Remparts road, and built at the same time, is the Four-Pounder Tower, the name referring to the cannon housed there in the 15th century.
