Montebello castle is located on the east side of Bellinzona on a hill of the same name; it can be reached on foot from the Piazza Collegiata or from the Nocca residential area. The castle has been known by a number of names including Schwyz Castle from 1506 and St Martin’s Castle after 1818. The inner portions of the castle date back to the 13th/14th centuries, whilst the wall fortifications were built in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Archaeological and Civic Museum, opened in 1974, is housed in the castle, which has spectacular views and was restored starting in 1903.
