Molard Tower can be found at the heart of Geneva’s left bank, at the foot of the Old Town. The Place du Molard is enhanced by a lovely octagonal fountain with a marble obelisk dating from 1771, and overshadowed by an impressive tower of military origin. In the 14th century the tower formed part of the defensive wall, which surrounded the city and protected the port. It was taken down and rebuilt in 1591, and has been restored several times since. Decorated with painted friezes and several coats of arms, it also has a tablet sculpted to the glory of "Geneva, City of Refuge".
