The Münster (Cathedral) is a heritage site and, with its red sandstone walls, multi-coloured roof tiles and twin towers, is a dominant landmark of the city. It has a long and eventful history, starting with the first Carolingian cathedral built by Bishop Haito (805-823) which was attacked and destroyed in 917. The magnificent second cathedral was built by Heinrich II, the Emperor of Germany (c.999-1025) and this remained until replaced by a late Romanesque period cathedral, completed in 1225. In the main, this is the Münster seen today although it was damaged and restored in Gothic style following the 1356 earthquake.
