The Mittlere Bridge (literally middle bridge) was the first to be built across the River Rhine, linking Basel with the north. It was constructed in 1226 by Bishop Heinrich von Thun, who also established the fortified town of Kleinbasel on the north bank as a defensive position. The south bank had the Rhine Gate in the old city fortified wall (demolished in 1839) as protection. In 1905, with the advent of the electric tram, a new bridge had to be built. A copy of the old bridge chapel, the ‘Käppelijoch’, is a nostalgic reminder of the original historic structure.
