Ranked among the most important private libraries in the world, the MBF, located in the village of Cologny, represents the life’s work of Martin Bodmer (1899-1971). With approximately 160,000 documents in 80 languages, including one of the few copies of the Gutenberg Bible, this is an astounding collection. The collection also holds cuneiform tablets, Greek and Coptic papyri (with the oldest manuscripts of St John’s Gospel and three comedies by Menander) and relics of antique civilisations (such as Greek and Roman coins). On 21 November 2003 a new museum, designed by the architect Mario Botta, was built to house the most remarkable pieces of this impressing collection.
