The Marktplatz, one of the best known squares in Basel, is dominated by the Rathaus (City Hall) (see separate entry). A hive of activity, fresh vegetables, fruit and flowers are on sale every day, except Sunday. Almost all the old burghers’ houses around the Marktplatz have been demolished, but the Renaissance-style building, the Zunfthaus der Weinleute (Wine Guild), known as Geltenzunft, remains. The members were wine traders and tavern owners and additionally controlled wine quality. Fancy a coffee? Then try the Confiserie Tea Room Schiesser at Marktplatz 19, a Viennese style coffee house which has a great view of the City Hall.
