Located in Marktgasse, which has the Prison Tower at one end and the famous Clock Tower at the other (see separate entries), are two contrasting fountains, created by the 16th century Swiss Renaissance sculptor Hans Gieng. He is thought to be of Swabian origin and to have become a Fribourg citizen; his style is typical of Swabian art. As opposed to the Anna Sieler fountain (see separate entry), the Marksman (Schützenbrunnen) has an allegorical figure of a troop commander in full armour with a bear at his feet. It is thought to date from 1543, with the basin from 1783/84.
