The Mariastein Abbey is a Benedictine monastery and a place of pilgrimage, located approximately 15 km southwest of Basel. According to legend, the Virgin Mary performed a miracle here in the late 14th century and a stone cave chapel was first mentioned in 1434. The abbey was established in 1648 and was secularized as a result of the French Revolution in 1792 and again in 1874 because of the German policy of ‘Kulturkampf’; it was officially re-established in 1971. The late Gothic basilica has a classical façade and a Baroque interior and stands over the Chapel of Grace (Gnadenkapelle).
