The ancient Grisons town of Maienfeld is located some 3 km east of Bad Ragaz and has a population of around 2,750. It is famous for its wine and also as a result of Johanna Spyri’s classic book, Heidi, set mainly in Maienfeld; the Heidi Village is nearby (see separate entry). First mentioned in 831 AD when it was called Lupinis, features of the town are its lovely patrician houses, the 17th /18th century Schloss Salenegg, now a wine estate, and the 13th century Schloss Brandis. The latter has a restaurant where you can dine in the Knights’ Hall.
