The Sanctuary of Madonna D’Ongero lies hidden in the heart of the San Grato Botanical Park (see separate entry). The park was once the property of the patron of Carona and the chapel would also have formed part of the estate. The church dates back to the 18th century and was built in the Baroque style with arcades richly decorated with stucco. There are some delightful frescoes by the artist Antonio Petrini. The building is what is called a votive chapel, which means people made (and still make) pilgrimages to leave gifts for the saint in exchange for having their prayers answered.
