Carved into the cliffs above Lake Schiffenen, about 9 km northeast of Fribourg, the Madeleine Hermitage in Räsch, near Düdingen, was first mentioned in 1448 and referred to in documents from 1609. In the period 1680-1708, the hermit Johann Dupré and his helper Johann Liech did most of excavation of the hermitage, which has various rooms with a total area of 120 square metres. The Düdingen Parish, who own the site, conducted extensive renovations in 2005/06. The natural erosion of the uneven, wave-like floor bears evidence of a 20 million year old sea in Fribourg.
