The Untertorbrücke over the River Aare is Berne’s oldest remaining bridge; originally a wooden structure built in 1256, its construction triggered a war. The bridge was fortified and, it is thought, partially covered, it was severely damaged by floods in 1460. Rebuilt in its current form as a stone bridge in 1461, it was not completed until 1489, although used from 1467 onwards. Until 1834 it was Berne’s only bridge over the Aare. The fortifications were removed in 1757 and further alterations took place between 1818 and 1864. It is still used today and its three spans total 52.5 metres (172 feet).
