The Longines Company, now part of the Swatch group, has (since its foundation in 1832) been established in St Imier, some 28 km west of Biel. The Musée Longines records its long history through a collection of watches, navigation instruments, tools, rare documents, pictures, medals and posters. The company made its first pocket watch in 1867 and its first wrist watch in 1902. In 2008, a 1929 gold Longines wrist watch, which belonged to Albert Einstein (1879-1955) the German born theoretic physicist, was sold at auction for USD 596,000.
