The library of the Einsiedeln Abbey (see separate entry) is justly famous and holds 1,230 manuscripts (500 of them dated before 1500), 1,100 incunabula and early prints (prior to 1520), 230,000 printed volumes and current periodicals. St Benedict required monks to read extensively and the library covers more than 1,000 years of learning. There is a particular focus on Einsiedeln history and culture, Benedictine monasticism, theology, liturgy, biblical studies, spiritual literature and devotional works. The library is not open to the general public, but forms part of the daily guided tours organised by the Einsiedeln Tourismus Office.
