Lake Walen (Walensee) is one of Switzerland’s larger lakes, with a surface area of 24.19 km² (about 9.34 square miles), a third is in Glarus canton and the balance in St Gallen. Fjord-like, it stretches from Weesen (some 13 km north of Glarus) in the west, to Walenstadt in the east. Regarded as one of the most beautiful and uncrowded stretches of water in Switzerland, it offers many attractions to visitors. These include lake cruises, boat hire from pedalos to motor boats, swimming, wind surfing, waterskiing and diving, or merely dining in one of the many attractive restaurants around the shores.
