The Étang de la Gručre, located approximately 27 km northwest of Biel and about halfway between Tramelan and Saignelégier, is a lake in a marshy site which is a nature reserve of national importance. Surrounded by peat bogs, with peat up to eight metres deep, the lake was created in the 17th century as the dam for a mill. One of Switzerland’s greatest wetlands, it is an area of great natural beauty and has a log path trail (under an hour’s walk) with ten information boards. The main lake is about 600 metres long and 60 metres wide at its narrowest point.
