The Gelmer funicular, the steepest in the world (gradient of 106%), takes you up to Lake Gelmer (Gelmersee) at 1,850 metres above sea level. The lower station is at Handegg (close to the Hotel Handeck), about 34 km southeast of Brienz. The funicular track length is 1,028 metres and the breathtaking ride takes about 10 minutes; the funicular operates at half hourly intervals, carrying 24 passengers. Hiking around the lake takes about two hours, or you can relax and enjoy the superb views. The Handeck swing bridge at the lower station offers a spectacular view down to the waterfalls, 70 metres below.
