Every year, thousands of pilgrims come to pay homage in the Lady Chapel with its Black Madonna, which faces the visitor on entering the church of Einsielden Abbey (see separate entry). Built of black marble, it stands on the site of the original hermit’s chapel and the statue, by an anonymous artist, with a black face is above the altar. Dating from the 15th century, the Madonna is clothed in rich robes and wears a crown. The nearly 1,000-year-old chapel was pillaged by French revolutionary troops and a new chapel was built and opened in 1817.
